The Inductee Project Participants delivered a donation of 300 masks (200 cloth & 100 disposable) and 160 pairs of socks to the Mission Care Center located at 6150 South Loop East, Houston Texas on Thursday, April 15, 2021. The Director, Ms. Dianne Mlih was so pleased to receive these items. We did not have the opportunity to tour the facilities as that was their first day opening to the public. We were invited to return at a later date. The Center currently houses 80 patients.
At each meeting we collect at least 2 baskets of necessary items for seniors or persons who need assistance. Over 500 items have been given out at the Mission Care Nursing Home, under the able assistance of Achiever Geraldine Perry. The Youth and Juniors made Christmas cards for all residents. The senior citizen committee is made up of: Rebecca Taylor Porter, Margaret Nichols, A Laura Alex, Lillian Hall, Dorothy Watkins, Earnestine Randle-Forest, Jerry Ann Pruitt, Cassandra Phea, Geraldine Perry, and Sandria Tolliver. This committee has three chairpersons. Achiever A. Laura Alex chairs the senior baskets, Achiever Sandria Tolliver and Achiever Mary Addison chairs the expo. Achiever Geraldine Perry chairs the community outreach and the overall committee.
Every year for the past 12 years, (except for 2020), the chapter has hosted a Senior Expo for seniors (55+). This Awesome and free affair is usually held in the early spring. It was held in April of 2018, and June of 2019. It is growing and glowing. Each year is it getting larger and we have more items to give away. At Expo 2019 there were more than 150 persons in attendance and that number does not include the Achievers and the Youth/Junior Achievers who assisted with serving. Our Youth and Junior Achievers are committed to serving the seniors.
We have something special each year for some deserving seniors at our Profiles of Prominence. In September 2019 we gave 4 deserving seniors $50 one stop shop gift certificates: The selected Seniors were: SOLON JACOB suggested by Dortha Blair; PAMELA GRAVES suggested by JaMarcus Graves; GERTHA JENKINS suggested by Rebecca Taylor Porter; and RITA J. LeBLANC suggested by Achiever Barbara LeBlanc.
The pandemic has changed how we do things. Missouri City says “where there is a will, there is a way.” We were not able to do the nursing home donations as we normally would. Instead, we paid for items at Sam’s and they delivered them to the nursing home straight from the warehouse without the items being touched by human hands.
We have two youth groups and is assisting another chapter with their youth and juniors. Our Youth and Juniors have held their regular monthly meetings, under the able leadership of Achievers Christine Lametrie, Jerry Ann Pruitt, Veronica McLaughlin, and other Achievers. The Youth Division is being groomed to become the leaders of our communities in the future. The youth division is growing and glowing. The Youth and Juniors are embracing the change brought about by COVID-19. They are excited by the zoom meetings and events.
Our Chapter's Youth and Junior Achievers are participating in the Adopt-A-Block program cleaning up trash from the blocks between Cleburne Street and Southmore Boulevard on Emancipation Avenue (Approximately one mile) in Houston, Texas. They also assisted at the Houston Food Bank.
Achiever Willie Belle Boone is the chairperson of this committee. Achiever Sylvia Fitch is a member of this committee. In 2020 we joined in the “When we all Vote” movement by the NAACP. We called registered voters in Texas and in Georgia, encouraging them to vote. Working with the NAACP has been a rewarding experience.. We get to interact with persons all over the United States. The elections in 2020 were something to behold – getting all persons who were registered to vote. The hard work paid off.
